Morning Run Club

Get ready to lace up (or Velcro!) your shoes! McKinley Run Club Starts on Monday, September 30th!

jogathon_web-2979The McKinley Run Club was started by a group of parent volunteers to help get everyone moving before school each morning. Students and families met each morning from 8:05 – 8:20 am to run or walk laps around the McKinley track.

McKinley Run Club is open to all students (TK-5th Grade) and even family members who are interested in a little morning activity to start the day. Participants don’t need to sign up, just show up! All students will have a card with their name on it (sorted in bins by their classroom teacher) to scan and track their laps throughout the year, and Community cards will be available for family members who plan to join in the fun.

The gate will open at 8:00 am so runners are ready to blast off at 8:05. Run Club will be held Monday-Friday (weather dependent). Enter the Joint Use Park at the Palm Street gate. Run Club ends when the first bell rings at 8:20 am.

Looking forward to lots of miles and smiles this year at Run Club!
Your Run Club Co-Chairs, Christine Barreras and Nikala Coder

Volunteers Needed

We need volunteers to keep Run Club “on track“! We’re looking for consistent volunteers to be openers and scanners. If you’re interested in helping out, please sign up for the day or days that we can count on you to set up and/or scan.

The following positions are needed each day:

Day Lead: One person is needed as the Day Lead for each day. This person is responsible for opening and closing Run Club and scanning runners.

  • Arrive at the front office by 7:50 am to get the storage locker key, set out bins and white board, and unlock the Palm Street gate.
  • Scan runners
  • Pack up materials and return them to the front office

Scanner: At least one other person besides the Day Lead is needed to scan runners. Additional scanners are welcome and if slots are full, feel free to jump in and help.

Download the SLT Scanner app and select “Running Club” (not Jog-a-thon!). Click Start Untimed Run to begin scanning. Remember to turn up the volume on your phone so the kids can hear the chime!

Weather Guidelines

Please be aware of the following guidelines for Run Club when there is a possibility of rainy weather.

  • Run Club will be cancelled if the weather app says that there is 80% or more chance of rain during Run Club. A notification will also be posted on FAME.
  • Run Club will be cancelled if the track is muddy or there are puddles. This is done to protect the track.
  • If it rains unexpectedly during Run Club, Run Club will continue until the rain gets heavy and/or is unlikely to stop. The end of Run Club will be made by the opener for that day.

We recommend that families of McKinley Run Club participants join the Run Club email list to get important updates and cancellation notices.

Girls on the Run

Wednesdays and Fridays from October 2 – December 13 from 3:15 to 4:45 pm

Girls on the Run (GOTR) has fun, evidence-based programs that inspire participants to recognize their inner strength, increase their level of physical activity, imagine their possibilities, and confidently stand up for themselves and others.

Girls on the Run inspires individuals of all abilities to discover, build, and grow their self-confidence. Together, they experience a sense of belonging and connection as a team. Trained coaches facilitate lessons that blend physical activity with life skill development, including managing emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy. At the end of the season, the team completes a Community Impact Project and a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion. More information can be found on the Girls on the Run website.

Note for PrimeTime and Character Builders Families

Unfortunately, children enrolled in Character Builders or PrimeTime will not be able to participate in Girls on the Run on days they attend Character Builders or PrimeTime. These are the same rules governing participation in other after-school enrichment activities such as ASE programming.
